Celebrating Women in the Arts

French Embassay

On 31 March 2021, Ambassador of France to South Africa, Aurélien Lechevallier, hosted an art viewing event to celebrate women artists, as International Women’s Rights month and the Mexico leg of the Generation Equality Forum came to an end.

The reception was co-organised with the Embassy of Mexico, UN Women in South Africa and Ms Carol Bouwer.

The Generation Equality Forum is a global meeting for gender equality, convened by UN Women and co-organised by the Governments of Mexico and France, with the close participation of civil society.

Amongst others, the Forum aims to celebrate the power of women’s rights activism and feminist solidarity. A second session of the Summit will be held in France from the 30th of June to the 2nd of July.

The event saw pieces displayed in the French Residence, by a majority of women artists and some male artists, whose works resonate with the feminist ideals espoused by all parties.

These artists included Esther Mhlangu, Zanele Muholi, Nandipha Mtambo, Lady Skollie, Dr. Esther Mahlangu, Azael Langa, Nicolas Lehmann collaboration with Azael Langa, Chris Soal, Nienke Van der Meulen, Olwethu de Vos and Zizipho Poswa
