In my initial sculpture series, Look Up, I explored the fragility of life through male and female forms. The skeletal figures, gazing upwards, symbolized the vulnerability we experience during difficult times when illness and disease threaten our existence. This project was deeply personal for my family, highlighting how small and fragile life can feel.

As I transitioned to my current contemporary series, I began reflecting on mortality and transcendence. The skeletal form, particularly the pelvis, became central to my work. Many of my recent sculptures focus on the female form.

Sitting at the bedsides of my mother and mother-in-law as they passed, I noticed how their pelvises became more pronounced as their bodies deteriorated. My sculptures pay homage to the pelvis as the seat of creation, stability, and vulnerability. Through it, I attempt to touch the essence of humanity, where flesh and spirit meet.

Bronze, with its enduring nature, is my chosen medium, contrasting the fleeting nature of life. I’ve started working directly with wax, which, though risky during casting, frees me from the limitations of mold-making. These newer sculptures emphasize the gradual decay of the body with a wormhole-like effect, serving as a poignant metaphor for mortality. In capturing this delicate balance, I aim to bridge the tangible and the transcendent, inviting viewers to reflect on their own mortality and find solace in the beauty of impermanence.

In my most recent work, I’ve shifted the focus away from death, delving instead into the realm of pain. This creative journey was inspired by my wife’s two-decade battle with fibromyalgia. The sculpture's pose mirrors the physicality of pain, resembling a fetal curl, much like an infant contorting in response to colic. Through this piece, I hope to express the emotional and physical weight of suffering, inviting viewers to explore the hidden depths of the human experience.

I enjoy experimenting with patinas, ranging from blacks to warm browns and golds. At this stage in my life, I’ve come to believe that art should be shared. I hope my sculptures resonate with others facing similar life stages, offering peace and understanding beyond what words can express.
