André Stead is a renowned South African artist known for his exceptional sculptural works and diverse artistic expertise. Born in Evander in 1975, Stead's artistic journey began at an early age, attending art classes and receiving recognition for his talents. He further honed his skills at the Pro Arte School of Arts in Pretoria, specializing in painting and graphics.
Relocating to Cape Town in 1994, Stead delved into metalworking under the guidance of John Allesandri. His artistic exploration extended to woodwork and bronze casting processes, acquiring valuable experience at the Doyle Art Foundry. At the Bronze Age Art Foundry, Stead mastered the intricacies of the lost-wax casting technique and gained proficiency in all aspects of sculpture production and resource management during his partnership from 2004 to 2007.
Throughout his career, Stead collaborated with esteemed artists and contributed to numerous art exhibitions and trade shows. His artistic repertoire expanded, encompassing sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, and more. Notably, he was commissioned to create nine bronze relief panels for the iconic Burj Khalifa Development in Dubai in 2007, solidifying his international recognition.
Stead's artistic evolution led him to explore various themes and series. His "Female" series, showcased in solo exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, garnered acclaim in 2009-2010. The subsequent "Anamorphic" series, introduced in 2011 at the Evolution exhibition in Franschhoek, demonstrated Stead's adeptness at capturing the essence of the "essential" form.
In collaboration with Laurence Graff, Stead created the sculptural installation "Flight of the Swallows" for the Indochine restaurant at the Delaire Graff Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. With stainless steel, plexiglass, bronze, and aluminum as his chosen mediums, he crafted captivating installation artworks that merged technology with human nature in thought-provoking ways.
Stead's exhibitions, such as "Illumination" at the Christopher Møller Art Gallery and "Elemental Man" at the Knysna Fine Art gallery, showcased his seamless integration of the Anamorphic Series, offering colorful reflections on human motivations and primal forces. In the "Emergence of Man" exhibition (2014), he united his stainless steel/plexiglass and figurative sculpture, providing a vivid exploration of human nature.
