Knox Clayton Costa Rican , b. 1946

Overview

Needlepoint has become a significant focus of Clayton's artistic practice. Beginning in Cancún in 2005, he continued developing these works during evenings spent travelling for design projects. Following his return to Atlanta, textile-based work evolved into a major creative pursuit, providing a medium through which to explore pattern, colour, detail and the possibilities of material. His practice has since expanded to include collage, reflecting a continued curiosity about the relationship between image, texture and the handmade.

Clayton studied fashion and interior design at the Museum School of Art in Boston, before undertaking apprenticeships in interior design with Paul Gardella and fashion design with Charles Spada. He subsequently worked in fashion retail at Louis of Boston, where he also designed homes for new Harvard faculty members, before joining Britches of Georgetown in Atlanta. In 1975, he established F Alonzo, a fashion and interior design business, initially operating with a single assistant. His fashion design practice, which continued until 2010, included work for prominent figures in the art and entertainment worlds, including Faith Ringgold, Miriam Schapiro, Bernice Steinbaum and RuPaul.
